About:

Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food and affects more people than meets the eye. According to The Davis Enterprise, as of 2015, 1 in 6 Yolo County residents face food insecurity. Similarly, UC Davis’ Undergraduate Experience Survey of 2016 reported that 24% of students ran out of food before they had enough money to afford more and of those, 9% said it occurred often. This is an uncomfortably high number of students facing financial burdens resulting in the inability to get proper nutrition. These statistics show that not only is this a problem faced in Yolo County and the City of Davis, but it is also a struggle here at UC Davis. Therefore, we are focusing our efforts into building a one-stop website to help everyone in the Davis community have better access to resources that already exist to combat food insecurity.

Our Goals:

In order to resolve the issue of food insecurity in Yolo County, we thought it best to establish a website that provides these individuals a place with recipes, restaurants, resources and grocery stores that accept EBT, Cal Fresh, or have savings on whole foods. In addition to a website, we have developed a Facebook page that allows the public to announce savings that they personally know of and can share will others. Our goal is to promote the resources readily available to people to increase their usage. By exploring this website and Facebook page the hope is visitors will learn about resources they did not originally know they had available to them and in turn decrease food insecurity. We also want to publicize events and volunteer opportunities for the community to bring people together in service to increase the resources available to our community through communal efforts.
